Trained at national firms. Run as a studio.
Edward J. Goodwin, AIA, learned the work at nationally recognized architecture and interior design firms, including the Hillier Group and Cope Linder Architects. He founded Goodwin Architects to bring that experience, together with a team of architects and designers, directly to building owners, retailers and homeowners.
The firm's work falls into three areas: retail design, the renovation and repositioning of existing buildings, and custom residential design and renovation. Architecture and interiors are handled under one roof, so the plan, the materials and the finished rooms are decided together.
Who we work with
Developers & property owners
Repositioning an underperforming building, or putting up a build-to-suit for a committed tenant.
Retailers & tenants
Fitting out a new space or renovating a center so it leases and sells.
Homeowners
Adding on, opening up a kitchen, or building new on the Main Line and beyond.
One firm for the whole building, inside and out.
Full architectural and interior design services for commercial and residential clients, from feasibility and planning through construction documents and site visits.
Building renovation & repositioning
Older office and retail buildings given a new plan, a new face and a new market. We study what the building can become, then document the work to get it there.
Retail design & tenant fit-out
Storefronts, shopping center renovations and tenant spaces planned around how people shop and how landlords lease.
Build-to-suit office
Ground-up office buildings designed around a specific tenant, from 12,000 to 50,000 square feet.
Custom residential design
New homes drawn for the site and the family who will live in them.
Additions & home renovations
Two-story additions, family rooms and kitchens that fit the house they join, so the new work reads as if it was always there.
Interior design
Interiors handled by the same team that designs the architecture, so finishes, lighting and layout are resolved together.

How a project moves from idea to occupancy
Five phases, one team. You always know which drawing set you're looking at and what decision comes next.
Phase 1: Consultation
We walk the site or building with you, talk through goals, budget and schedule, and tell you plainly what's feasible.
Phase 2: Concept design
Plans, massing and 3D views that let you see the direction before anything is fixed.
Phase 3: Design drawings
The chosen concept is developed into a coordinated design, with materials and interiors resolved.
Phase 4: Construction documents
The blueprints your builder prices and builds from, and the set that goes to the township for review.
Phase 5: Construction administration
We stay on the project while it's built, answering contractor questions and reviewing the work against the drawings.
Questions owners ask first
Do you work on both commercial and residential projects?
Yes. The practice covers office, retail and tenant work alongside custom homes, additions and renovations. The same team handles architecture and interiors on both.
Where do you take on work?
The office is in Ardmore, on the Main Line outside Philadelphia. The firm takes projects in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and the Florida Keys.
Can you help me decide whether to renovate or rebuild?
That's often the first conversation. Building renovation and repositioning is a core part of the practice, so we can tell you what an existing structure can realistically become before you commit to a direction.
Do you stay involved once construction starts?
Yes. Construction administration is part of our service: we answer contractor questions and review the work against the drawings until the project is complete.
What should I have ready for a first conversation?
An address, a sense of what you want to achieve and a rough budget range. Existing drawings or photos help, but they aren't required.
Tell us what you're planning.
Share the basics of your building, site or home and we'll come back with next steps, whether that's a site visit, a look at existing drawings or a feasibility study.
